One of Minnesota's biggest unsolved mysteries will be the focus of a new podcast.

Almost everyone knows the story of Jacob Wetterling, the 11-year-old boy who was abducted in 1989 while riding his bike home from the video store in St. Joseph. Wetterling's friend and younger brother said a masked man took the boy – person of interest was named in the case last fall.

But 27 years later, Jacob Wetterling's disappearance remains a mystery.

American Public Media will explore the disappearance and investigation in an eight-part podcast called "In the Dark", APM announced Monday.

Here's the trailer:

The podcast will be led by Madeleine Baran, a Peabody Award-winning investigative reporter for APM.

Baran told MPR News the name of the podcast refers to how the crime happened, as well as the "lack of transparency" around the investigation that has spanned several decades.

She also said unlike the popular podcast "Serial", "In the Dark" does not aim to solve the crime.

"We wanted to examine what went wrong and why this case has not been solved. And most importantly, why Jacob Wetterling hasn't been found," Baran told MPR News.

The first episode of "In the Dark" will premiere on Sept. 13, with a new episode released weekly.
