Actor John C. Reilly to play Minneapolis gig with bluegrass band

Oscar-nominee John C. Reilly is coming back to the Twin Cities -- not to make a movie, but music.

WCCO-TV reports that Reilly, who was nominated for Oscar in 2003 for his role in the musical "Chicago," will play a bluegrass gig with John C. Reilly & Friends Saturday night at the Assembly Theatre at the Women’s Club of Minneapolis.

Reilly is no stranger to the Twin Cities. He's previously done gigs at venues like the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, and co-starred in the movie version of Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" in 2006.

Saturday's gig will also feature Reilly's pals Tom Brosseau, Becky Stark, Dan Bern, Sebastian Steinberg and Willie Watson.

Reilly -- who has starred in such films as "Step Brothers," "Boogie Nights," "Gangs of New York" and voiced the title role for the 2012 animated feature "Wreck-It Ralph" -- says there's a reason his band plays smaller venues like the 630-seat Assembly Theatre.

"We try to keep them to places where they're really going to have an impact … theatres, church spaces," Reilly told WCCO. "We're not the kind of band that's going to play 40 shows or anything."
