Already threatened with closure, Minneapolis restaurant targeted by vandals
A Minneapolis restaurant already struggling to stay afloat because its new landlord has hiked its rent has been dealt another blow this week.
Owner Marla Jadoonanan and her husband Ian arrived at Marla's Carribean Cuisine at Bloomington and 38th on Friday to find the restaurant's awning vandalized and air conditioning unit stolen.
The timing couldn't be worse, with the acclaimed restaurant already looking for help to stay in business after its business was sold and the new owner imposed a rent hike.
In February, it launched a GoFundMe drive to raise the money it needs to find a new location.
So far it's raised $2,265, with all donations intended to go towards building a new kitchen at what they hope will be their next home.
The appeal has garnered support from, among others, Minnesota celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern, who described it in January as "one of the most remarkable restaurants in the Twin Cities."
The restaurant's Caribbean concoctions saw it receive a visit from Guy Fieri in 2013, when he brought his "Diners, Drive-ins & Dives" show to the Powderhorn location.
