Alternative mottos for Jesse Ventura’s State Capitol plaque
News emerged this past week that former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura doesn’t like his plaque in the State Capitol.
His main complaint, MPR reported, is the use of a motto attributed to him saying: “Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat,” which Ventura denies ever saying.
It appears the phrase dates back to his wrestling days, though Ventura attributes that to a wrestling colleague of his, Ken Patera.
Nonetheless, given it’s placed on a plaque viewed by visitors to the Capitol – including many children – Ventura has insisted “that has to go.”
So if state government staffers are looking for some replacement mottos, GoMN has scoured Ventura’s back catalog for some alternatives.
“I ain’t got time to bleed.”
This immortal line was uttered by Ventura in the 1987 movie Predator, and is arguably the most famous line he delivered in his movie career.
For budding politicians, it’s important to know that attacks come at you from multiple sides and to deal with it, you just need to push ahead, trying to achieving your goals no matter how much damage you take.
“This stuff will make you a goddamned sexual Tyrannosaurus, just like me.”

This quote is widely attributed to Ventura, though we can’t find the original source on it but wanted to include it as it’s awesome. He’s describing how in his wrestling days his mustache made him look more “like a villain.”
Intimidation is not always desirable in politics, but can nonetheless can be a useful tool when persuading reluctant colleagues or lawmakers to your side.
“It’s high time to legalize it.”
Among Ventura’s long-running crusades has been his attempts to legalize marijuana use, calling for an end to the war on drugs by loosening restrictions on a drug that he believes would reduce deaths and provide a huge boost to the economy.
Minnesota’s legalized marijuana for medical purposes, but maybe this quote in the State Capitol – which he delivered in a recent Forbes interview – would serve as inspiration to go one-step further with state weed laws.
“Are you ready for pain? Are you ready for suffering?”
Back to movies, and this was one of Ventura’s lines when he appeared as the brilliantly named “Captain Freedom” in another Schwarzenegger movie, The Running Man, also in 1987.
This could serve as a warning for political prospects that the job of a public servant is often thankless. Also, this is how Ventura delivered the line, and it’s amazing.
“I love my country, not my government.”
Apparently this Ventura quote took T-shirt form at some point, judging by this interview Ventura gave with Alex Jones. It fits in well with Ventura’s libertarian point of view.
It’d be pretty ironic to have this quote feature in the home of Minnesota government. It would serve as inspiration to young, future voters to put country before politics, or challenge them to make government better.

This would be weird to see in the halls of the State Capitol, we mainly chose it because it’s well worth watching this X-Files season 3 episode “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space,” which features Gov. Ventura as a government spook known as “The Man in Black.”
