American Idol: 2 Minnesotans advance to solo round

Two Minnesotans survived the group round on American Idol Wednesday night to move to the solo competition, which gets underway on Thursday, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Shannon Berthiaume, the 17-year-old from South St. Paul with a big voice, moved on, along with the other three women in her group the Violet Vixens. They sang "Somebody to Love" by Queen.

Minneapolis singer Mark Andrew also advanced to the next round. He and his group sang the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends."

A third Minnesotan, North Branch's Cindy Jo Scholer, was eliminated during the group round of the TV singing competition.

The solo round begins Thursday night. American Idol airs on FOX9 in the Twin Cities.
