The art shanties are back.

After taking last year off, the Art Shanty Project is back on White Bear Lake with 19 uniquely designed shanties to turn the frozen lake into "part art gallery, part art residency and part social experiment," according to the project's website.

The artist-designed shanties opened this weekend – more than 2,000 people attended the first day of the project on Saturday, the Art Shanty Project's Facebook page says.

The project is open and free to the public every Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., through the end of the month. Click here for a schedule of events.

At this year's event, visitors will be able to check out space-themed shanties, a shanty designed after a boiler room, a shanty where you can dance, as well as one where visitors can interact with the frozen lake. Read more about the shanties in this year's project here, and see photos of the shanties here.

Peter Haakon Thompson created the Art Shanty Project 2004, Crave says. It was held on Medicine Lake in Plymouth until 2012, before relocating to White Bear Lake, where the project drew more than 10,000 people in 2014, the Pioneer Press says.

An artist collective of volunteers ran the project until last year, when it became a nonprofit organization, the paper says. Grants, including $100,000 from ArtPlace America, helped bring the Art Shanty Project back this year – and secure the project for next winter as well.
