Barry Manilow's piano will launch musical instrument drive for St. Paul schools

Barry Manilow is donating a Yamaha to St. Paul Public Schools. And we don't mean a motorcycle.

Manilow's gift of a piano is launching a musical instrument drive for the school district. And to encourage others to follow suit with donations of their own, he's offering to give a pair of concert tickets to anyone who does.

Manilow is performing on April 7 at the Xcel Energy Center, which announced the instrument drive.

Anyone who donates a new or "gently used" instrument during the week before the show will receive two tickets. The drive is being held through the Manilow Music Project, which has been holding similar drives at the cities on the 72-year-old singer's "One Last Time!" tour.

A representative of St. Paul Public Schools says the district would like to provide instruments to all of the more than 5,000 students in music programs at its schools. Robin Lorenzen said in a statement: "We believe the gift of music supports the development of 21st Century lifelong learners and propels academic success in our students and we thank Mr. Manilow for this amazing generosity!"

There will be a dropoff area at the Xcel Energy Center for the instruments from April 1st through 7th.

Other places where schools have benefited from his instrument drives include Miami, New Orleans, and the Cincinnati area. Often the drives are held for a particular school but in St. Paul's case it's for the entire district.

Manilow says "One Last Time!" is his way of saying thank you to fans for their support over the years. Tickets to the St. Paul show range in price from $19.75 to $169.75.
