As dramatic arrivals go, it doesn't get more Northern Minnesota than this.

The picture above shows Dr. Brian Donovan, a Bemidji State University professor of English, taking an unusual mode of transportation as he arrived at BSU's centennial commencement ceremony.

Complete with a cap, gown, and – most importantly – a life jacket, the professor paddled his way across Lake Bemidji to the BSU campus.

Pictures of his journey were shared on Facebook by Larissa Donovan and the university, and have been attracting plenty of comments and shares.

His exploits shouldn't come as a surprise given his BSU bio hints at his active life, with cycling and scuba diving listed among his interests.

He has taught at the university since 1990, having moved to Bemidji from his native New York.
