Best drivers in the country? Congratulations, Minnesota.

We've done it again!

What isn't Minnesota great at? Stop. We know you're running down a list of classic Vikings failures, but outside of sports the Land of 10,000 Lakes is basically the Land of We're No. 1 in Everything.

The latest reason to gloat that you live in Minnesota comes from a study that ranks the best driving states in the country. Minnesota, you're No. 1.

The lofty ranking comes from Car Insurance Comparison, which utilized 3,000 data points from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to rank each state through five key viewpoints that focus on fatality rates.

  1. Fatality rate per every 100 million vehicle miles traveled
  2. Failure to obey traffic laws
  3. Careless driving – number of pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities per state
  4. Drunk driving – number of roadway deaths caused by drunk drivers
  5. Speeding – number of traffic fatalities caused by speeding

According to MnDOT's Office of Traffic Safety, there were 364 deaths on Minnesota roads in 2019. So far in 2020 there have been nine confirmed fatalities, which is 10 fewer than there were at the same point in 2019.

A fluky first-place finish? Nope. This is the fifth consecutive year Minnesota has finished No. 1 on the list. Cross the border and you'll find that Wisconsin rates No. 22, with the nation's fifth-highest drunk-driving fatality rate to blame for a lower score.

Wisconsin might have the NBA-leading Milwaukee Bucks, the possibly Super Bowl-bound Green Bay Packers and fewer potholes after winter, but Minnesota has the world's most qualified drivers to navigate those holes in the road.
