Best-selling author Vince Flynn has died after a battle with prostate cancer, WCCO-TV reports.

He was 47.

Flynn died Wednesday morning at 1:50 a.m. at United Hospital in St. Paul.

MPR reports that David Brown, a publicist with Flynn's publisher Simon & Schuster, confirmed the author's death.

Flynn, who was born in St. Paul, and graduated from St. Thomas Military Academy High School and the University of St. Thomas, authored 14 espionage novels -- many of them best-sellers centering on the character of CIA agent and counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp.

He was reportedly working on his 15th novel at the time of his death, which was scheduled to come out in October.

The author disclosed in a fan letter on his website in February 2011 that he was diagnosed with Stage III metastatic prostate cancer.

KARE 11 says Flynn made the announcement public in an effort to better educate the public about the disease.

Fox 9 reports that a prayer vigil for Flynn Wednesday night planned by friends will still go on as scheduled.

The author's first novel, "Term Limits, was released 1997. The Pioneer Press says Flynn self-published the book (which was later picked up by Pocket Books) after he couldn't realize his dream of flying for the Marines because of concussions he suffered as a child.

The Star Tribune reports that Flynn began writing while working as a bartender in St. Paul in an effort to overcome his dyslexia.

His work also caught the attention of Hollywood, as shows like the Kiefer Sutherland counter-terrorism thriller "24" brought Flynn on as a consultant.

CBS Films purchased the rights to film Flynn's books in 2008, and in 2011, the studio said it was going to kick off the author's Mitch Rapp film series with an adaptation of his best-seller "American Assassin," Deadline Hollywood reported.

Flynn, who lived in Edina, is survived by his wife and their three children.
