Bill Pohlad to direct biopic on Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson

Oscar-nominated film producer Bill Pohlad has been tapped to direct a film about the life of legendary Beach Boys singer-songwriter Brian Wilson, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Pohlad, one of the sons of former Twins owner Carl Pohlad, will direct "Love and Mercy," which will chronicle Wilson's early days as well as now. Paul Dano. who starred in such films as "Little Miss Sunshine" and "There Will Be Blood," will play the younger version of Wilson.

According to the Reporter, Pohlad has obtained the rights to film Wilson's life from the musician. He also has the life rights of Wilson's wife, Melinda. The script reportedly focuses on Wilson's battle with mental illness and his relationship with his wife.

Pohlad was one of the filmmakers nominated for producing the Best Picture Oscar nominee "The Tree of Life" in 2012.

His company also produced the independent film hit "Into the Wild" and "The Runaways" -- the Joan Jett musical biopic starring Kristen Stewart.

The filmmaker also executive produced the acclaimed films "Brokeback Mountain" and "A Prairie Home Companion," which was filmed almost entirely on location at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul.

Pohlad's turn behind the camera is his first since he directed the independent feature "Old Explorers" in 1990.

"Love and Mercy" is also the name of a the song from Wilson's self-titled 1988 debut solo album. It was re-recorded and became a hit on Wilson's "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" album in 1995.
