Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a boxer whose wrongful triple murder conviction became a symbol of racial injustice, died on Sunday at age 76, according to reports.

Carter was the inspiration for Bob Dylan's 1975 song "Hurricane," which shed light on the injustice. His story was also portrayed in "The Hurricane," a 1999 film starring Denzel Washington, who was nominated for an Academy Award.

The star prizefighter's boxing career was cut short when he was convicted of three murders at a tavern in New Jersey in 1966. He was freed in 1985 when a federal judge ruled he and John Artis, who was with Carter on the night of the killings, did not receive fair trials, CNN reports.

Carter was being treated for prostate cancer in Toronto, Canada when he died, Artis told the New York Times. Artis was with Carter when he died, the Sun Sentinel says.

Carter founded Innocence International, a nonprofit organization that works to free prisoners it considers wrongly convicted, the New York Times says.
