The Salzer family was the talk of Minnesota on Friday when they welcomed Jimmy Fallon into their home for dinner ahead of Super Bowl weekend.

The Tonight Show host was looking for an authentic Minnesota dinner experience and he found it with the Salzers at their home in Champlin.

It was there he was served the most Minnesotan of meals – tater tot hotdish – as well as some Grandma's Goulash.

On Tuesday, the Salzers shared the story of how they came to welcome Fallon into their home. You can read what they told the Pioneer Press hereand KARE 11 here.

What makes a hotdish?

The book How to Talk Minnesotan states that hotdish in all its forms typically is formed by a base of cream of mushroom soup and canned vegetables.

For tater tot hotdish, ground beef and tater tots (naturally) are added, though there's variety in terms of the amounts you use, the base soup you use and what vegetables you add.

It's clear from the recipe that the Salzers stayed close to the classic formula for the famous Minnesota dish, selecting frozen corn as the vegetable and recommending a base of either mushroom or celery soup.

Other iterations found online call for green beans or mixed vegetables, while some even suggest beef or chicken soup mix for the base.

The Salzers are also advocates of the "straight lines" placement of tater tots atop the hotdish, while some suggest a random approach.

The Salzers' Tater Tot Hot Dish recipe contained

1.5 lbs ground beef

1 small yellow onion, minced

2 cans cream of mushroom or celery soup

1/2 cup milk

2 cups frozen corn

1 32-oz. pkg tater tots

1 cup cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

You can find the cooking instructions for the recipe here viaKARE 11 and the Pioneer Press.
