Chelsea Handler rocked a Minnesota-made T-shirt on 'Ellen'

My Sister, the company behind the shirt, wants to help end sex trafficking.

Comedian Chelsea Handler wears her heart on her sleeve, and her politics on her Minnesota-made T-shirt.

The 42-year-old appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week wearing a black top with the words: "It's my body. It's my choice." It was made by Minneapolis clothing company My Sister.

A day prior to the interview on Ellen, Handler shared a photo of herself in the shirt on Facebook and Instagram, which tipped off My Sister.

"The rumor is that Chelsea Handler is wearing our It's My Body, It's My Choice tee on The Ellen DeGeneres show tomorrow! It's safe to say we're freaking out a little!!!" My Sister wrote on Facebook Wednesday.

Even with a little bit of a heads-up, it wasn't enough time to prepare for the boost in sales that followed. Maria McGinty, My Sister marketing director, told the Star Tribune that the company had to place a rush order on more of the shirts after the episode aired.

"We were completely surprised," McGinty said. "We have definitely received increased interest in our shirts."

You can find it on My Sister’s website and at its Uptown Minneapolis store, but a few sizes are on backorder until Dec. 22, the paper says.

My Sister's mission

Every T-shirt My Sister sells supports the fight against sex trafficking around the world.

The company donates a portion of its proceeds to nonprofits like Minnesota Girls Are Not For Sale, which in 2011 launched an eight-year, $7.5 million campaign to end sex trafficking in the state; and The Link, which provides emergency shelter and housing to at-risk youth.

The Minnesota Human Trafficking Task Force says the demand for commercial sex drives prostitution and human sex trafficking. Estimates show that 8,000 to 12,000 people are involved in prostitution or sex trafficking every day in Minnesota, a 2009 fact sheet from the Advocates of Human Rights shows.

The cause is in line with Handler's current mission. After spending the majority of her career making people laugh, Handler announced in a statement to fans last month she's leaving her Netflix comedy talk show to pursue political activism.

Handler talked with DeGeneres about her partnership with Emily's List, an organization whose is mission to elect pro-choice Democratic women to office.

Here's a clip from the episode:

Handler isn't the only celebrity supporting My Sister. Actress Amber Tamblyn has partnered with the brand on a collection of shirts.
