City hopes 'Fargo' wood chipper gets featured on 'College Game Day'

If the city of Fargo, N.D., has its way, the infamous wood chipper from Joel and Ethan Coen's dark crime comedy "Fargo" will get some attention on ESPN's "College Game Day" Saturday, the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead reports.

"College Game Day" is broadcasting live from downtown Fargo Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The show's co-hosts -- Chris Fowler and Desmond Howard -- accidentally referenced the movie and wood chipper last week when Fowler said they were going "off the grid" and visiting Fargo.

When Howard responded by saying, "That's a really good movie," Fowler said, "It's more than the movie and the wood chipper."

The wood chipper is usually on display at the Fargo Convention Bureau's visitor center.

The city obtained the chipper from "Fargo" crew member Milo Durben, who lives west of the Twin Cities. Durben sold the chipper to the city of Fargo about 15 years after he bought it at a movie prop sale.

Durben told me in an interview for the film's 15th anniversary in 2011 that initially used the device to chip wood, but stopped after the film developed a cult status and earned Oscars for the Coens for Best Original Screenplay and Frances McDormand for Best Actress.

At one point, the wood chipper had its own float in the annual Delano 4th of July parade, Durben said.

Thanks to its new home in Fargo, the wood chipper now has its own Facebook page.
