City of Bemidji ponders role, if any, in new 'Fargo' series

Bemidji officials appear doubtful about the city's role in the upcoming TV adaptation of the Joel and Ethan Coen's Oscar-winning film "Fargo," the Bemidji Pioneer reports.

The FX Networks limited series starring Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman begins shooting in Calgary, Ontario, later this month.

The film version, released in 1996, won Frances McDormand a Best Actress Oscar for playing Marge Gunderson, a very-pregnant Bemidji-based sheriff investigating a kidnapping case involving a Minneapolis car salesman (William H. Macy) and a couple of thugs (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare).

Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp tells the Pioneer that FX has not reached out to him for consultation, nor does he believe the office was contacted prior to the 1996 film.

Hodapp says "it's all Hollywood" and it will "be interesting to see how they do it."

Earlier this month, Colin Hanks -- the son of Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks -- was cast to play Duluth Police Deputy Gus Grimly.

The Hollywood Reporter says the most recent additions to the cast include Bob Odenkirk ("Breaking Bad"), Glenn Howerton ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"), Kate Walsh ("Grey's Anatomy"), Oliver Platt ("The Big C") and Joey King ("Oz the Great and Powerful").

The industry publication says Odenkirk will play Bemidji Deputy Bill Olson, who has seniority over the younger and more ambitious Deputy Molly Solverson (Allison Tolman).

Platt, who also starred in "X-Men: First Class," will play Stavros Milos, also known as "the Supermarket King of Minnesota."

Set to debut in the spring of 2014, the 10-episode limited series will feature a whole new “true-crime” story with a new case and characters, FX says.

The cable network notes that the series will still have the humor, homicide and “Minnesota nice” associated with the 1996 film.
