It appears that the word "Oscar" is in the future for the new film from Minneapolis natives Joel and Ethan Coen -- and the star of the film whose first name is Oscar.

"Inside Llewyn Davis," the Coen brothers' pre-Bob Dylan tale about the folk scene in New York City's Greenwich Village in 1961 was met "rapturously" at its world premiere Sunday night at the Cannes Film Festival Sunday, The Associated Press reports.

Joel Coen told reporters that they wanted to tell a story of a "lesser known scene" that Dylan came into, as opposed to "how he changed that scene."

Starring Oscar Isaac in the title role, "Inside Llewyn Davis" follows a talented but adrift singer-songwriter trying to attract tension after a personal tragedy. The AP said Isaac's performance "drew immediate raves" and "predictions of an Oscar nomination."

The Hollywood Reporter says the film received a five-minute standing ovation, and Isasc "enjoyed the loudest applause, along with shouts of 'bravo!' for his performance."

According to The AP, the film is loosely based on the unfinished memoir by folk singer Dave Van Ronk, "The Mayor of MacDougal Street." The singer also released an album in 1963 album titled "Inside Dave Van Ronk."

“Inside Llewyn Davis” is one of 20 films featured in competition at Cannes. Filmmaker Steven Spielberg is heading up the jury, which will award the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or.

The film also stars "The Great Gatsby" star Carey Mulligan as Llewyn's foul-mouthed friend and Justin Timberlake as a cheesy pop folkie based on Irish folk singer Paul Clayton.

"I enjoy looking ridiculous in everyday life, so that was not hard for me to do in a movie," Timberlake told reporters.

While The AP described Timberlake's performance as "uproarious parody," Isaac's performances of the songs are "intimate and powerful."

Joel Coen said while there are "funny things" about folk music, "the music is something that we have a genuine and deep fondness and respect for."

The film will be released in U.S. theaters Dec. 7 in select markets and will expand to more screens Dec. 20 — a move designed to get the film attention before the Oscar nominations are announced in January.

The Cannes Film Festival got underway last Wednesday in the South of France and runs through Sunday.
