Minnesota-born filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen's latest film "Inside Llewyn Davis" took the Grand Prix prize at the Cannes Film Festival Sunday in the south of France, the Hollywood Reporter reports.

The Grand Prix is the second place prize behind the prestigious Palme d'Or -- which was given to the drama "Blue Is The Warmest Color."

“Inside Llewyn Davis” was one of 20 films featured in competition at Cannes. Filmmaker Steven Spielberg headed up the jury, which also included director Ang Lee, and actors Nicole Kidman and Christoph Waltz.

The Hollywood Reporter says "Inside Llewyn Davis" received a five-minute standing ovation after its Cannes debut last week, and lead actor Oscar Isasc “enjoyed the loudest applause, along with shouts of ‘bravo!’ for his performance.”

The film -- a pre-Bob Dylan tale about the folk scene in New York City’s Greenwich Village in 1961 -- also stars Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, F. Murray Abraham and Roseau, Minn., native Garrett Hedlund.

Co-director Joel Coen told reporters at Cannes that he and and his brother wanted to tell a story about a “lesser known scene” that Dylan came into, as opposed to “how he changed that scene.”

"Inside Llewyn Davis" will be released in U.S. theaters Dec. 7 in select markets and will expand to more screens Dec. 20, just in time to be considered for the Oscars.

While its being billed as a music drama, the recently released debut trailer for the film showcases the Coens’ brand of dark humor and trademark quirky characters.

Playing over the trailer is Minnesota native Dylan’s classic song “Farewell.”
