More than 45,000 fans saw a spectacular music and light show from Coldplay at U.S. Bank Stadium Saturday night, with frontman Chris Martin making three tributes to Prince.

The British indie/rock/pop/dance band (depending on the era) started their globe-spanning Head Full of Dreams Tour in March 2016, a month before Prince died, and upon finally arriving in Minneapolis they couldn't resist honoring the Purple One.

At the end of piano ballad "The Scientist," Martin broke into a few bars of "Raspberry Beret."

He also name-checked Minnesota's favorite son during "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face," ad-libbing: "I wanna play in the place where Prince was born."

His final reference came as he addressed the crowd, harking back to the band's first performance in Minneapolis some 15-odd years earlier at First Avenue – the place where Prince "did 'Purple Rain.'"

Coldplay are the second and final major concert act at U.S. Bank Stadium this summer, with the Star Tribune reporting acoustic changes at the arena led to a better auditory experience than at Guns N' Roses a few weeks back.

Justin Bieber was due to play the stadium next week, but canceled the show along with the remainder of his tour.

Fans were each given light-up wristbands as they entered the stadium, contributing to what was a visual feast for those in attendance.
