Como Zoo's new baby zebra gets named after a longtime volunteer

St. Paul's Como Zoo welcomed a baby Zebra at the beginning of September, but the zoo didn't announce its name until Wednesday.

"Krump" is named after visitor greeter and volunteer Frank "Krump" Krmpotich (pronounced krump-a-vich) who passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 14. The 84-year-old volunteered at Como Zoo for over two decades. He was known for coming to his shift early and handing out Pearson mints with a "a friendly wave, large smile, and a quick joke," according to a news release.

“Everyone loved Frank," said Michelle Furrer, Como Park Zoo & Conservatory Director, in the release. “Whether he was handing out Pearson’s Mints to the staff, or pennies to the kids, he always looked like he was having the greatest time. He will be missed terribly by everyone at Como."

Krump's wife, Connie Krmpotich, told MPR that her family also plans to dedicate a bench in her husband's honor.

“He just loved meeting and greeting all the people, he was such a people person," she said in the release. “Frank had the nickname ‘Krump’ as long as I’ve known him, and that’s since third grade."

Baby zebra Krump is the second zebra born at Como Zoo in the past two months. He is a Grant's Zebra – a subspecies of the Plains Zebra that is native to the grassy plains of eastern Africa, including Kenya and Ethiopia.

You can check out the new foal and the rest of the zebra herd in the outdoor zebra and kudu exhibit. It’s free and open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
