Concert reviews: Rihanna's Xcel show underwhelms critics
Pop superstar Rihanna clearly failed to impress local critics with Xcel Center concert Sunday night in St. Paul.
Chiding both critics from the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press for showing up nearly an hour late to the stage, the news didn't get much better for the Rihanna -- who's been documented as much for her tumultuous relationship with fellow singer Chris Brown as she has for her music in the past few years.
Jon Bream in his review for the Star Tribune Rihanna "delivered a disappointing performance that lacked energy, pizzaz and star turns" in comparison to her "dazzlingly sexy show in 2011 at Target Center."
Ross Raihala was a little more enthusiastic in his review for the Pioneer Press, saying "there was plenty to enjoy" since Rihanna spares no expense with her shows, yet the concert "felt bogged down by gloominess."
Raihala also noted that Rihanna also devoted a lot her latest stop on her Diamonds World Tour to her new album "Unapologetic," saying she "has so many hits, she had to skip some pretty big ones during Sunday's set to make sure she included enough material from her latest album."
