Masks are already required to enter Costco, but the wholesale retailer announced this week that it will soon mandate even stricter mask rules as a preventative measure against increasing COVID-19 cases around the country.
The new rules require that everyone over the age of 2 must wear a mask or face covering to enter the store. It also will now require people who are exempt from wearing a mask due to a medical condition to wear a face shield.
“If a member has a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a mask, they must wear a face shield at Costco,” CEO Craig Jelinek said in a letter to members.
"This updated policy may seem inconvenient to some, however we believe the added safety is worth any inconvenience,” Jelinek said. “Our goal is to continue to provide a safe shopping environment for our members and guests, and to provide a safe work environment for our employees.”
The new rules go into effect Monday, Nov. 16.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises anyone older than 2 to wear a mask when around people outside of their household.
