COVID-19 forces 'Hamilton' to be postponed — again

The popular Broadway musical will now return to Minneapolis in two years.

Hamilton's return to Minneapolis has been postponed, again, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hennepin Theatre Trust announced Thursday the Broadway tour of the popular musical about Alexander Hamilton will be rescheduled to two years from now, with performances from April 4-May 7, 2023.

Hamilton had been previously rescheduled to return to the Orpheum from July 27-Aug. 29 of this year.

Hennepin Theatre Trust cited the COVID-19 pandemic's ongoing impact on the touring Broadway industry, which has been closed for more than a year, as the reason the show has once again been pushed back.

Hamilton first came to Minneapolis in 2018 and was scheduled to return to the Orpheum in the fall of 2020, but it was pushed back to summer 2021 due to the pandemic.

Season ticket holders will be automatically moved to the rescheduled dates and contacted directly with more information. Tickets for the 2023 return of Hamilton will go on sale to the general public sometime in 2022 (tickets for this summer's now-rescheduled show hadn't yet gone on sale to non-season ticket holders).

Meanwhile, Hennepin Theatre Trust says it is "actively working" on a plan to reopen that follows public health guidelines, with finalized plans being shared closer to show dates.

“The health and well-being of our audiences, casts, crew and staff remains a top priority. The Trust continues to consult with local, state and national health officials and advisors in all decisions related to reopening in the safest manner possible,” Mark Nerenhausen, president and CEO of Hennepin Theatre Trust, said in a statement.

“Throughout the pandemic, we’ve come to understand and appreciate just how deeply shared experiences such as attending live events, spending an evening with friends or dining out in restaurants impact us as people," Nerenhausen added. "The totality of theses shared experience contribute to vibrancy and economic vitality of the Hennepin Theatre District.”

Any additional changes to Hennepin Theatre Trust's Broadway season will be shared with ticket holders. Thus far, tickets for the 2021-2022 Broadway season have only been available as part of ticket packages and to season ticket holders.

The next Broadway show that's scheduled for the Orpheum is Come From Away, which is scheduled to begin Sept. 7.
