Crucial real estate listing service has been down since Friday, frustrating Realtors

NorthstarMLS has been down for days at a time when the market is crazier than ever.

Part of NorthstarMLS — the multiple listing service real estate agents in Minnesota use to list properties that are for sale — is down.

This is preventing Realtors from adding new properties to the MLS system and making changes to current listings, so new homes aren't getting listed as for sale during the busiest time for real estate in years.

NorthstarMLS last weekend executed planned upgrades to its add/edit system for listings but it didn't go well, so Realtors have been struggling to add new listings since Friday, as well as edit any of their current listings.

"We had a planned upgrade to our database and other parts of our technology infrastructure that hasn't gone as planned," John Mosey, president and CEO of NorthstarMLS, told Bring Me The News on Wednesday. "This has resulted in our customers — brokers and agents across Minnesota, western Wisconsin and parts of Iowa — being unable to enter or update listings in the service.

"What this means to buyers and sellers is that new listings are not appearing and changes in status (i.e. pending and sold) are not being recorded and made known to Realtors and their clients," Mosey added.

Mosey said agents and brokers were aware of a scheduled downtown on NorthstarMLS from 6 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Sunday, but it didn't go as planned, so they've decided to roll back the changes to how the system was before 6 p.m. Friday.

"This is in progress and we expect all functions to be fully restored by later today," Mosey added. "We are deeply disappointed in how this 'upgrade' has affected so many people who rely on us to make the real estate market work across Minnesota and beyond."

According to emails sent to Realtors who pay for NorthstarMLS, the company is rolling back the add/edit system at 7 p.m. Wednesday, with plans to have the old system back online by 10 p.m.

"We are sorry for the additional delay but do not want to rush it out and increase the risk of another poor release. Thank you for your patience, and we will update again as needed," the email said.

This has been a major headache for Realtors — and their clients waiting to list their homes — during an unprecedented and crazy time for the real estate market in Minnesota.

The Twin Cities in particular has seen a period of limited housing supply combined with greater demand that is seeing many houses on the market for under $500,000 exchanging hands for well over asking price.

According to NorthstarMLS' website, it provides MLS to more than 93% of Realtors in Minnesota and more than 20,700 Realtors and appraisers overall. The company helped facilitate more than 106,000 real estate transactions valued at more than $32.4 billion in 2020.
