There will be a section of Macy's huge anchor store at the Mall of America that's a little cheaper starting next Saturday.
The department store is holding the grand opening of its new Macy's Backstage outlet store on the third floor of its MOA location on Aug. 18.
As MSPMag reports, the first 200 people who arrive at the store will win freebies including snacks and scratch-off Macy's cards to mark the opening of the off-price store.
Located not far from another outlet store, Nordstrom Rack, the new Macy's Backstage will take up 11,600 square feet where its bedding and bath section used to be, the Star Tribune notes.
Macy's has been expanding its outlet store offerings across the country this year, including opening up at the Maplewood Mall in March, while it has another location at the Apache Mall in Rochester.
Backstage has been part of Macy's efforts to turnaround its fortunes following a period of struggles seen in the past few years.
The Bend Bulletin reports that the expansion of its discount store is expected to result in 100 Backstage sections opening in 2018 alone, offering high-end apparel but without the high-end prices.
Retail Dive, which refers to Backstage as Macy's "Hail Mary," says the store mostly resembles TJ Maxx, with price tags telling shoppers what they would have paid somewhere else, rather than being littered with "clearance" sales and discount markers.
