Coming next February, a dog sled derby will be held on Lake Minnetonka.

The Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby will be held Feb. 8-9, 2020 and is inspired by dogsled races that began in 1937, and organizers are confident that the event will become an annual tradition on one of the most popular lakes in the Twin Cities area.

“I grew up running sled dogs and caring for my dad’s racing team—plus, I guided sled dog trips to the Boundary Waters. The sport is something that just stays in your bones,” said Klondike Founder and Board President Bethany Hway.

Hway says she was inspired by the annual Beargrease sled dog marathon that starts in Duluth and ends in Grand Portage.

The Lake Minnetonka race will travel along the lake's shoreline, on the edge of communities in Wayzata, Orono, Spring Park, Tonka Bay and Mound. It starts and ends on Water Street in Excelsior.

Excelsior Brewing is hosting a fundraiser and silent auction for the event on May 31, which will feature live music from Tim Mahoney and opportunities to see some majestic huskies known for pulling the sleds.
