Don't eat raw beef sandwiches (Yuck) ... apparently that's a thing in Wisconsin?

A warning to the people of Wisconsin: Don't eat raw beef sandwiches.

Federal health officials sent a warning specifically to the people of Wisconsin Thursday, advising them to not eat raw beef sandwiches.

Apparently people do that over the holidays.

The Department of Health Services addresses "Wisconsin residents who consider raw ground beef sandwiches ... a holiday tradition," and explains that eating raw meat can be dangerous to your health.

Those sandwiches are sometimes known as "cannibal" or "tiger meat" sandwiches. It's also called beef tartare.

The raw ground beef is often topped with salt, pepper and onions. Then it's served on rye bread or crackers. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it's considered an hors d'oeuvre or appetizer.

The DHS says eating this has led to E. coli and salmonella outbreaks in Wisconsin. One in 1994 affected 150 people. The most recent outbreak happened in 2013.

Raw beef can also contain bacteria like campylobacter and listeria.

“We strongly discourage state residents from eating raw or undercooked ground beef," State Health Officer Karen McKeown said in a statement.

Some people are at greater risk of getting sick from raw meats. Those people include older adults, pregnant women, children, and people with weakened immune systems.

The DHS recommends people cook their meat and use a thermometer to make sure it reaches 160 degrees.
