On a holiday that's about thanks, a group of dancers from Minnesota's Northland is grateful for a chance to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Ten dancers from Dreamdance Academy in West Duluth are in New York to perform in Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

The News Tribune reports they'll be leading off the parade with a "jazzy danceline" performance to a mashup of Christmas-themed music, wearing elf-like costumes along the 2.5-mile route through Manhattan.

The high schoolers have spent the week in New York, sightseeing and rehearsing before Thursday morning's parade.

Dreamdance director Peter Myre tells WDIO dancers from his studio are invited to the parade every four years. Myre says in the dance world a trip to New York is a rite of passage, adding that he tries to get to the city every year to learn from the scene there.

A couple of the Duluth dancers took part in the parade four years ago. Abby Lonne of Proctor tells the News Tribune the group has memorized its dance but "normally the whole thing is changed once we get there."

According to the parade's website, the Dreamdancers will perform in front of about 3.5 million people lining the route and another 50 million watching on television (on NBC beginning at 10 a.m.).

Altogether, 1,100 dancers and cheerleaders are a part of the parade, organizers say.

And actually, more than 10 of them will be from Duluth. A group from Duluth, Georgia, will bring a bit of Bollywood to the festivities by performing classical Indian dance, Atlanta radio station WABE reports.
