Eagan ditched its ugly phone tower for one that glows and sparkles

Check out Eagan's new tower. It actually sparkles.

A southern Twin Cities suburb just got a brand new, sparkling tower. Literally. It actually sparkles.

Eagan just finished replacing its old Sperry Water Tower – which hasn't actually held water since 2009. It was pretty much just used as a massive, bulky cell phone and emergency communications tower.

So earlier this year, the city tore it down to make way for something a little more aesthetically pleasing.

The city says its new tower stands 198 feet, 53 feet taller than the last one.

The $1.7 million project features telecommunications equipment from carriers like Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. But you'd never know that just by looking at it, considering the tower glows all sorts of colors from sundown to midnight.

This will give Eagan a "one-of-a-kind light show," Director of Public Works Russ Matthys said. "The idea of this longtime landmark will live on, but in a more creative manner."

Creative, indeed. It has 185 LED light fixtures and more than 5,400 bulbs. Those can be programmed to run tons of color combinations. Like it can do red, white and blue for Independence Day.

Tuesday, city officials tested out some of the effects. There's one that resembles snowflakes, another that's a fall setting, a rainbow and more.
