The Back Bar at Young Joni follows in the footsteps of Nye's Polonaise and Palmer's.

The plaudits keep coming in for Ann Kim's celebrated Minneapolis restaurant Young Joni, though this time it's for its drinks rather than its food.

The Back Bar is Young Joni's speakeasy-style bar, accessed by an unassuming entrance in an alleyway beside the Northeast restaurant, with a single red strobe light lit when it's open.

It has been named one of only 27 "Best Bars in America" selected this year by the venerable Esquire Magazine.

"This back bar with a super-chill basement vibe is like the after-after party, when the host opens up his secret stash," Esquire wrote. "The tunes spinning on a reel-to-reel and your deftly made drink command all of your attention."

It's not the first Twin Cities bar to make the grade in Esquire. Nye's Polonaise famously made the list in 2006, as did Cedar Riverside's Palmer's Bar in 2014.

Neither of those however had quite the year that Young Joni is having in 2019, with the latest landmark moment coming a month when Ann Kim took home the Best Chef: Midwest gong at the James Beard Awards.

The Back Bar is known for its distinctive and innovative cocktail list, which you can check out here.
