The TV series "Fargo," based on the iconic Joel and Ethan Coen movie of the same name, won two awards at the Golden Globes Sunday night in Hollywood.

The FX anthology series won over Starz's "The Missing" and three projects from HBO: "Olive Kitteridge," "The Normal Heart" and "True Detective."

Billy Bob Thornton won the award for best actor in a miniseries or TV movie for his role as a murderous drifter in "Fargo," beating out one of his co-stars, Martin Freeman.

Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey from "True Detective" and Mark Ruffalo from "The Normal Heart" were also nominated in the category.

"Fargo" the series, created by Noah Hawley, was inspired by the Coen Brothers' 1996 dark comedy, which was set in several locales in Minnesota during a bleak winter.

In the FX series, Freeman starred as a mild-mannered Minnesota insurance salesman who gets into trouble when Thornton's shady character comes to town.

Colin Hanks played a Duluth police officer and Allison Tolman was a young deputy. The two of them were nominated for Golden Globes in the supporting acting categories, but did not win.

"Fargo" also won an Emmy for outstanding miniseries in August.

A second season of "Fargo" is expected to begin production in Canada later this month, and will be aired in the fall. It features several new cast members including Kirsten Dunst and Ted Danson.
