Barkhad Abdi is going to the Oscars.

The first-time Minneapolis actor is among the nominees for the 86th annual Academy Awards, announced Thursday morning in Los Angeles.

Abdi, who plays head Somali pirate Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse in the high-seas thriller "Captain Phillips," was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Abdi's name was the first announced Thursday by co-presenters Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

The Oscar nomination is the latest awards season honor for Abdi, who to date has been nominated for his supporting actor work by the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Movie Awards.

AMPAS has the full list of nominees.

Abdi didn't win at the Golden Globes ceremony Sunday night, but was the subject of some high-profile references by hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

The Bill Pohlad-produced historical drama "12 Years a Slave" earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Pohlad, however, was not listed among the nominated producers. Seven filmmakers produced the film in all, but only five were listed as nominees.

Chanhassen Dinner Theatres alum Amy Adams, who won a Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy Golden Globe for “American Hustle” Sunday night, was also nominated for a Best Actress Oscar Thursday. The nomination is Adams' fifth overall, but first in the Best Actress category.

Joel and Ethan Coen's folk music tale "Inside Llewyn Davis" was shut out of the nominations, despite several major nods from organizations like the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the Golden Globes and the CCMAs.

The ceremony for the 86th annual Academy Awards is set for March 2 in Los Angeles.
