Minnesotans will all have their own opinions on where the state's best donuts can be found, but a Food & Wine writer thinks they're in Lindstrom.
Writer David Landsel compiled an exhaustive list of the best donuts in each state, which he describes as an "intensely personal" list "assembled after several years of doughnut eating in the name of research."
Minnesota's, he says, is the Lindstrom Bakery, about 45 minutes north of the Twin Cities in Scandinavian stronghold of Lindstrom.
The donuts he so admires are the work of owner Bernie Coulombe, who has been running her bakery for almost 47 years.
"On a typical morning, many of the patrons are here for Coulombe's unique Scandinavian cake donuts: crispy-crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, made with an egg-enriched dough, and topped in a small, sensible selection of fillings," Landsel writes.
"Years ago, the great Michael Stern (of Roadfood fame) asked Coulombe what made these donuts Scandinavian. Her response: I'm Scandinavian, and I make them. No further questions."
Naturally, Landsel's opinion will come with counters from many a Minnesotan who have their own personal favorites – albeit maybe not from Lindstrom residents.
If we look back at some previous "state-by-state best of" clickbait articles by national outlets, you'll find the likes of Bogart's Doughnut Co. and Baker's Wife in Minneapolis, the Hanisch Bakery and Coffee Shop in Red Wing, and Bloedow's Bakery in Winona among the state's best.
