Food & Wine says MN's best sandwich is at Tavern on Grand
Food & Wine has picked out the best sandwich in every state, naming Tavern on Grand's famous dish the best in Minnesota.
The magazine's list, published Jan. 11, says the walleye sandwich is the best sandwich in Minnesota, noting the fish will make you "probably forget all about ocean-caught seafood for a moment."
And although Food & Wine says you can get these fish sandwiches all over the state, no one makes it better than Tavern on Grand in St. Paul.
The restaurant has several walleye items on its menu, but it's best known for its sandwich, which why it's called "Our Famous Walleye Sandwich" on its menu.
It features a walleye fillet that's either grilled, deep-fried or blackened that's served on a toasted ciabatta loaf with lettuce, tomato, and a choice of traditional or jalapeno tartar sauce and a side of fries.
Here's what Food & Wine says about Minnesota's walleye sandwiches:
"Well-liked enough around here to be designated the state fish, there are easier catches than the walleye, but one fresh filet on your plate and you'll see immediately why this is the one everyone wants. Subtle and sweet, firm but almost melt-on-the-tongue, you'll probably forget all about ocean-caught seafood for a moment, and perhaps ask for seconds, maybe a walleye sandwich wrapped up to go for a friend, a friend who is you. One finds these all over the state, but only the Tavern on Grand in St. Paul, where Minnesota's state fish is the specialty, has the guts to call itself Minnesota's state restaurant—you'll start here. The sandwich is nothing fancy, and it doesn't need to be—just a nice, fresh filet, seasoned and fried, on a French roll. Skip the tartar sauce, for now. This is one piece of fish you need to taste properly."
