This Friday, you can give a pet a new home and family without paying the usual adoption fees in Minneapolis.

Minneapolis Animal Care & Control has announced a push to get as many pets as possible adopted in time for the holiday season, and will waive its usual fees for pets adopted from its shelter between 1-6 p.m. this Friday.

The city usually charges adoption fees ranging from $50 for cats and dogs (adopted by city residents, $100-$250 for non-residents) to $1,000 for large, exotic birds.

But these fees will be dropped during the Friday afternoon as it looks to "clear the shelter" of all adoptable animals prior to Thanksgiving.

It won't be completely free, as you'll have to buy a pet license, which cost $15 to $30 for a year's license, though it can be more than double that if the pets aren'y spayed or neutered.

Adoptions are handled on a first-come, first-served basis, but if multiple adopters want the same animal, there will be a "drawing" for who gets to adopt.

What's more, adopters must "meet and spend time with the animal they want to adopt before completing adoption paperwork."

If you're looking to adopt a cat, bring a carrier with you or buy a cardboard transport box at the shelter, dogs meanwhile must leave on a leash.

You can find the Minneapolis Animal Care & Control Shelter at 212 17th Ave. N. A list of adoptable pets can be found here.
