Former Minnesota Orchestra music director and highly regarded composer Stanislaw Skrowaczewski has been honored with one of Poland's highest civilian awards.

"Living outside Poland, I really didn't expect it," Skrowaczewski, 91, said, according to MPR News. "It was very nice."

Earlier this month, Skrowaczewski received the Grand Cross of the Order of Reborn Poland (Polonia Restituta) for his "outstanding services for Polish culture and his artistic achievements," Radio Poland reported.

“I have always been doing what I thought I should do and I have never expected to be given such a distinction, the highest I could think of,” the Polish native said, according to Radio Poland.

Many of his compositions have received international awards and recognitions and he was shortlisted for a Pulitzer Prize in 1999, according to the Minnesota Orchestra.

Skrowaczewski has lived in Minnesota since the 1960s. He still tours regularly in the U.S., Europe and Asia, according to MPR.
