Update, Thursday July 21: It's official.

21st Century Fox announced Thursday that Roger Ailes is resigning from his role as Chairman and CEO of Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network, and Chairman of Fox Television Stations. It's effective immediately.

Rumors that this was coming have been floating around for a couple days, as the powerhouse cable news giant faced sexual harassment accusations from news host and Minnesota native Gretchen Carlson.

The original story is below.

The Fox News chairman accused of sexual harassment by news host and Minnesota native Gretchen Carlson is set to leave the company.

The New York Times reports that Roger Ailes is negotiating his departure with the network's parent company 21st Century Fox, after a lawsuit was filed by Carlson on July 6.

They are discussing terms that could see Ailes stay on in a consulting position with Fox News, but the newspaper says it would still be a "humbling and startlingly sudden fall from power" for Ailes, who started the cable news channel "from scratch 20 years ago."

In a lawsuit, Carlson – a native Anoka who was named Miss America in 1989 – claimed that Ailes fired her after she refused his sexual advances and that she was subject to "severe and pervasive harassment."

She was fired on June 23 from her job presenting “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson” for Fox News, the lawsuit says.

Nine months before she left, Ailes allegedly told her the harassment problems she was having at work – which came from co-workers as well as Ailes – would be solved "if she had a sexual relationship with him."

Fox News sources told CNN Money that they expected Ailes will depart "within days," but that exit talks were still ongoing with no announcement made as of this stage.

"What I can say is there’s a lot of talk going on…at Fox with various people involved," one of Ailes’s attorneys, Susan Estrich, told The Daily Beast. "Roger hasn’t approved anything yet. Roger and Rupert [Murdoch, 21st Century Fox executive chairman] will talk. Rupert is due back in town [New York] next week."
