'Fresh, yet classic': 2015 State Fair poster features streetcar arch

Summer is just starting and who knows what it will bring?

But plenty of Minnesotans know where summer ends: at the State Fair.

To whet our appetites, the folks at the Fair have unveiled this year's poster, which is officially known as the 2015 Minnesota State Fair Commemorative Art (pictured above).

The illustration is by Twin Cities artist Adam Turman, who says he spent time last year hanging out at the new West End Market, under the Fair's refurbished streetcar arch.

The Fair's announcement says the illustration "combines bold colors and graphics with nostalgic, vintage charm for a fresh, yet classic artistic interpretation of our Great Minnesota Get-Together."

Fresh, yet classic .... kind of like the streetcar arch.

Just a few years ago, Pioneer Press columnist Joe Soucheray got a tip that the arch which stood at the Fair's streetcar entrance for decades had been abandoned in some woods near the Fairgrounds.

He got the attention of the Fair's longtime general manager, Jerry Hammer, who estimated that 17 million people had walked under that arch in its heyday.

The Fair restored the arch and installed it last year as the gateway to West End Market, which was created last year in the spot Heritage Square occupied for 50 years. Hmmm.... a fresh use of a classic spot, you might call it.

The State Fair runs from Aug. 27 through Sept. 7 this year. Find previous State Fair Art here.
