Fridley native's 'Drop Dead Diva' brought back to life at Lifetime

The Lifetime Television comedy drama "Drop Dead Diva," starring Fridley native Brooke Elliott in the lead role, is coming back for a fifth season after being canceled by the cable network earlier this year, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The show was dropped in January despite a season high 2.76 million viewers for its Season 4 finale in September. The network was reportedly at odds with the production over cost-cutting measures before the cancellation.

Elliott plays Jane Bingum in the show -- an intelligent lawyer who deals with weight issues after being a vapid, aspiring model in a previous life.

Elliott was born in Fridley and lived with her family in Blaine before they moved out of the state, eventually settling in Michigan. Prior to "Drop Dead Diva," Elliott mostly starred in Broadway productions, and as a touring production of the hit musical "Wicked" with singer Adam Lambert ("American Idol").

"Drop Dead Diva" creator Josh Berman told TVLine Saturday that the show was saved by some "creative financing."

The show also stars Margaret Cho as well as reality personality Kim Kardashian in a recurring part.
