Grammy surprise? Rumors that Prince will be there

The music world is all a-twitter (pun intended) at the possibility that Prince will make an appearance at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 8.

Us Weekly hinted at just such a surprise Tuesday, when it quoted a source saying the Minnesota-born singer might be part of the awards show.

"He has something very, very special in the works!" the source said.

The claim gets a little more validity since CBS, which is airing the Grammys show, tweeted about it too.

Prince made a similar surprise appearance on the Golden Globe Awards a few weeks ago, when he presented an award for Best Original Song to John Legend and Common for their song “Glory,” from the film Selma.

Prince didn't perform on the Globes stage, though, and fans are speculating he may do so for the Grammys with his current group 3rdEyeGirl, or perhaps with a reunited Revolution, his most famous band.

Others think he may participate in the Grammy tribute to Stevie Wonder, which takes place on Tuesday Feb. 10.

But music writer Ross Raihala at the St. Paul Pioneer Press is encouraging people to keep their expectations low.

Raihala notes that while Prince released two new albums in September 2014, and performed to rave reviews on Saturday Night Live in November, he's "botched" several chances to promote his new work on social media with less-than-satisfactory events on Facebook and a live streamed concert on Yahoo.

Prince abruptly shut down his social media sites in November. And he let 2014, the 30th anniversary of his seminal album "Purple Rain," come to a close without a reissue of the album as was expected.

So, as always, the enigmatic music superstar will likely keep us guessing until showtime.
