Here's a name you can apparently scratch off the list of possible Super Bowl performers

The halftime performer in Minneapolis remains a mystery

The people who run the Super Bowl almost never have to take no for an answer.

But according to a report by The Source, organizers of the big game got a big turn down from Jay-Z.

They say the superstar declined an invitation to headline the halftime show at U.S. Bank Stadium when the Super Bowl comes to Minneapolis in February.

Why would any performer refuse to take the biggest stage in show business?

The Source is among those guessing Jay-Z might not be happy with the NFL, given the shout out he gave to Colin Kaepernick from the stage at a festival in New York last week.

The rapper dedicated the song "The Story of O.J." to Kaepernick and to the late Dick Gregory, Essence says.

Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarerback, cited racial injustice when he declined to stand for the National Anthem last season. He has not been offered a contract by any NFL team this year.

Does Jay-Z not like the Twin Cities?

Here's an alternative theory: maybe Jay-Z's just feeling a bad vibe from Minnesota.

He reportedly made a bid to land the rights to Prince's unreleased music last year but was rebuffed by the Purple One's estate.

That seems to be what led to a track on Jay-Z's 4:44 album called "Caught Their Eyes," which rips the people handling Prince's affairs as "greedy bastards."

What's more, Minneapolis was briefly listed as a stop on Jay-Z's 4:44 tour when the schedule first came out in July. But that was quickly called a mistake and the December 6 date was instead given to Omaha, Nebraska.

The truth is we may never know why one of the country's biggest stars turned down the Super Bowl, if he in fact did. And the Super Bowl folks don't sound like they feel jilted.

According to Pro Football Talk, the league put out a statement on the Jay-Z reports Wednesday, saying no decisions have been made about a halftime performer and they won't speculate about particular artists.

They added: “Along with Pepsi, we know that we will put on a spectacular show. When it is time to announce her name we will do it. Or his name. Or their names.”
