HitNRun: Prince's new album drops one month from now

Not long after his music vanished from all internet streaming services, the Purple One is returning to the digital realm with a gift for his fans – a new album.

Prince has announced that his latest LP, an "experimental" effort titled "HitNRun," will be made available only on TIDAL on September 7, according to a Friday news release.

Described as an "exclusive" deal between the iconic musician and the streaming service (which is the brainchild of rapper Jay-Z), the partnership will also make TIDAL the home of Prince's vast catalog, Jay-Z said in the release.

"Prince has always been a visionary, a free-thinker. We're honored to offer his breadth of work, '1999,' 'Purple Rain,' etc., music that has inspired so many, on TIDAL," the rap star commented.

The new album will feature the recently released "Hardrocklover," which was well received when it hit the internet last month; reviewers praised it as a return to funky form for the Minnesota-born rocker.

Fans have been waiting for the new album since Prince's new backing band, 3RDEYEGIRL, announced that it was on its way during a performance on BBC Radio last month, the release indicated.

So what's behind the name?

According to the Rolling Stone, the title comes from Prince's most recent tour, which was called "Hit and Run."

The magazine says that there are so far no details as to whether HitNRun will see any "physical release" – meaning compact disc or vinyl.
