Huge stretch of I-35W will shut down this weekend

Plan ahead if you're going anywhere.
Publish date:

Well this is going to suck.

The busy stretch of I-35W between I-94 and the crosstown Hwy. 62 will close for the weekend starting Friday night.

The five-mile section of the interstate will shut down at 10 p.m. Friday before reopening at 5 a.m. on Monday.

The closure is the result of the ongoing improvement works to the freeway south of downtown Minneapolis, with crews this weekend using the closure to demolish the 26th Street Bridge over I-35W.

Drivers will be diverted via I-394, Hwy. 100 and Hwy. 62, likely causing backups on those roads.

Traffic woes will continue next weekend as well, when I-94 shuts between I-35W and I-394.

The weekend after, the same stretch of I-35W will close again for more construction work.
