Ice fishing in Brainerd to feature on HBO's 'Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel'

The ice fishing haven of Brainerd will get its moment in the spotlight on Tuesday when it features in an HBO show,.

Broadcaster Soledad O'Brien made the trip to frigid central Minnesota last month for the Brainerd Jaycees Annual Ice Fishing Extravaganza.

The segment will feature on Tuesday's episode of "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel," which will be broadcast at 9 p.m. Central on Tuesday.

The Brainerd Jaycees has been held ever year since 1991 and describes itself as the "world’s largest charitable ice fishing tournament." It attracts more than 10,000 ice fishing enthusiasts every year to Hole in the Day Bay on Gull Lake.

O'Brien, more accustomed to the anchor's desk than the frozen tundra, meets up with local fishing guide Dan Eigen for the segment, a 90-second teaser of which you can watch below courtesy of HBO.

She landed in the Brainerd Lakes area to find out what motivates the thousands of anglers who make the pilgrimage every year to Gull Lake.

While in Minnesota, O'Brien shared the temperature she was enduring with her 938,000 followers on Twitter.

Brainerd ice fishing contest postponed

Ice conditions on Gull Lake has forced organizers of the Brainerd Jaycee's Ice Fishing Extravaganza to postpone the event. The contest was scheduled for Saturday, January 21. It will now take place three weeks later, on February 11. KARE 11 reports all tickets for the fishing contest will be honored next month or can be exchanged for next year's event.
