It's the last day to visit the Ice Castles – you can blame the unusually warm weather

Ice Castles season was cut short again.

The Ice Castles that lit up downtown Stillwater for just over a month are closing for the season.

Organizers posted to Facebook saying it's getting too warm so the attraction is closing abruptly. Thursday evening is your last chance to visit.

"Although it seems Mother Nature wants to fast forward to spring, it has been an incredible season and we are so honored to have such awesome fans in this wonderful state," the post reads.

The castles will be open 6-9 p.m. and "possibly a little later," to give people a chance to enjoy it. You can get your tickets here.

Still a longer season than last year

This year, the castles opened Jan. 6 and will close Feb. 16. So they were open almost six weeks – minus some temporary closures due to warm weather.

When the castles first opened this year, organizers told GoMN they hoped to keep it open through the first week in March.

But above average temps cut the season short again – it was still longer than last year, though.

In 2016, the Ice Castles couldn't open until the end of January and closed a few weeks later.

Lakes are melting too

This warm weather has been no friend to winter enthusiasts, like ice anglers.

Cars and trucks have been breaking through ice on lakes – especially Lake Minnetonka.

Last weekend, two vehicles broke through. Then Thursday, it happened again to a truck.

And it's not just happening in the Twin Cities. A SUV broke through on Long Lake in Kandiyohi County.

All those people made it out safe. Still, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is encouraging people to keep their vehicles off the ice, saying it's a "life-threatening risk."

Ice conditions deteriorate rapidly in warm weather. Especially when it's 60 degrees – which it's supposed to be this weekend.
