Katey Sagal wows crowd at Mpls. 'Sons of Anarchy' event

"Sons of Anarchy" star Katey Sagal revved up her audience at Mill City Nights in Minneapolis Saturday night as she sang and shared stories of her career during one of only four stops in a new mini tour, the Star Tribune reports.

Music critic Jon Bream called the event -- "Katey Sagal: An evening of Music and the Cast of 'Sons of Anarchy'" -- an "intriguing, nicely paced two-hour program."

Sagal, 59, was accompanied by "SOA" co-stars Theo Rossi (Juice) and Mark Boone Jr. (Bobby Elvis) -- who stepped in for Ryan Hurst (Opie), who had to bow out of the show due to work commitments. The event, emceed by KFAN-AM personality Chris Hawkey, also featured R&B-turned-jazz singer Curtis Stigers, who opened the show singing the "SOA" theme and other songs.

Bream says the best part of the event was a Q&A session with the audience, who unsuccessfully tried to get "Sons of Anarchy" spoilers from Sagal. One audience member reportedly asked Sagal if she smokes marijuana (the answer was "no"), because her character on the show does.

Sagal also enlightened the audience on why she was fired from being a back-up singer on a 1978 tour with Bob Dylan, "because she rejected some kind of unnamed but implied proposition. Inquiring minds don’t need details," Bream wrote.

Noting how the tour is a way for Sagal "to work on her semi-dormant music career and reach out to 'Sons of Anarchy' fans at the same time," Bream was mixed on Sagal's singing performance.

The critic wrote that "Sagal showed an an attractive, rangy voice" as a frontwoman at the show, "But she performed like a backup singer: Never really seizing the vocal spotlight when it was time for her voice to soar."

Those who missed Sagal's show will soon get another chance to see her sing. The performer, who used to be a back-up singer for such acts as Bette Midler, Olivia Newton-John and Tanya Tucker, will get to show off her talents playing Artie's (Kevin McHale) mother on an upcoming episode of hit Fox show "Glee."

Sagal isn't the only singer-actress to appear in the Twin Cities this month. "The Breakfast Club" star Molly Ringwald is set to sing jazz at a concert at the Dakota Jazz Club Tuesday in Minneapolis with her group, the Molly Ringwald Quartet.
