Krispy Kreme plans return to Minnesota

At least one Krispy Kreme location is expected to open in the Twin Cities in 2025.

Krispy Kreme, which vanished from Minnesota with the closure of the state's last location in 2008, is planning a comeback.

The North Carolina-based doughnut chain is preparing to take over the former CVS Pharmacy at 5659 University Avenue in Fridley, construction documents show.

Fridley Planning Manager Stacy Stromberg confirmed Krispy Kreme filed a building permit application related to the remodel in late September. The application is expected to be approved by the end of the month.

According to Stromberg, a large portion of the building is planned to become a "donut factory", which will produce donuts that will then be delivered to other locations. A retail, dine-in area and drive-thru is also planned.

"The City is excited about the reuse of building and wish for Krispy Kreme’s success," Stromberg shared in an email, adding 2025 opening is expected in the late spring or early summer.
