Lange releases children's book as new 'American Horror Story' begins

Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress Jessica Lange has added the title of "children's book author" to her diverse resume, The Associated Press reports.

The Cloquet native, whose FX series "American Horror Story: Coven" premieres Wednesday night, released "It's About a Little Bird" last week.

The book, which Lange also did the photography for, follows a pair of young sisters who find a golden birdcage hidden in a barn on their grandmother's farm. The discovery of the cage leads the girls on an adventure to learn the story of the bird who once lived in it.

Lange, 64, tells The AP that she didn't specifically set out to write a children's book. Instead, it she says the idea came to her as she "working on some of my own black-and-white imagery and hand-tinting them" on her farm in upstate New York.

When she started writing the book, it was intended for her granddaughters as handmade Christmas gift.

Lange plays Fiona Goode (pictured, above) in the third season of "American Horror Story," the long-absent Supreme witch who returns to oversee a coven of young witches in New Orleans.

Series co-creator Ryan Murphy tells The Hollywood Reporter that the focus of the new "American Horror Story" ("AHS" is an anthology series featuring a new tale each year") is a "meditation on race relations in this country," and "an allegory for any minority group living in our country."

Lange was recently nominated for an Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie Emmy "American Horror Story: Asylum," and won in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category in 2012 for the first "American Horror Story."

She previously won Oscars in the Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress categories, respectively, for "Tootsie" and "Blue Sky."

The actress made local headlines recently with her open letter to Gov. Mark Dayton protesting the state's wolf hunt.

Lange released her letter on the advocacy site, Howling For Wolves.
