Legendary Nye's bar is coming back ... sort of

The owners of the original are reviving it with a new concept.

If you're still sore about the closing of Nye's Polonaise Room, we have some mildly exciting news.

Reports say the owners of the legendary bar – who shut it down last year after selling the site to property developers – are planning to open a revamped version of Nye's in the very building that replaced it.

Owners Rob and Tony Jacob tell City Pages the new establishment, which they're apparently calling "Nye's Piano Bar," will be "up and running" at the exact same address as its predecessor by Christmas.

Don't expect to relive any boozy memories when you walk in, though. City Pages says it "won't be the same" as the polka bar you remember, because the Jacobs want to "put to rest the old Nye’s, and start a new history, with new Nye’s."

That, and the building that housed the beloved joint was completely bulldozed to make way for an apartment tower

Despite that, some of the essence of the original will be there, with Finance & Commerce saying the bar's design "mixes elements of the old Nye’s with new, luxurious touches."

This version of Nye's will have some competition, though.

A few weeks ago, it was announced that a cocktail joint called "Sonder Shaker" would be opening up in the same development.

The Star Tribune says it'll be where Nye's old parking lot once stood, with plans to open before Super Bowl 2018.

About Nye's

Nye's Polonaise Room first opened its doors in 1950, and would go on to become a northeast Minneapolis institution.

In its later years, it became popular as a throwback to a bygone era, as little about the place changed over the decades.

Nye's received national attention in 2006 when Esquire (after "a four-month search") named Nye's the best bar in America

In late 2014, the owners announced it would close, saying it had been "struggling to keep above water" for several years.
