'Lincoln' Oscar winner has Minnesota roots

One of the men responsible for the Oscar-winning look of "Lincoln" is a Minnesota native.

Set decorator Jim Erickson won an Academy Award for Best Production Design and Set Decoration Sunday night in Los Angeles along with production designer Rick Carter. The duo's work topped "Anna Karenina," "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," "Les Miserables" and "Life of Pi."

Erickson lives in Salt Spring Island, British Columbia and has a dual Canadian-American citizenship, was born and raised in northern Minnesota, the Vancouver Sun reports. He moved to Canada in 1974.

Unfortunately, because Erickson was ill with the flu, he had to celebrate his Oscar victory at home, the Toronto Star reports.

Erickson, 62, was previously nominated for an Oscar for the Daniel Day-Lewis film "There Will Be Blood," and was the set decorator on nearly 40 films since 1982 -- including "Water For Elephants," "Watchmen," "Ali," "Independence Day" "The Last of the Mohicans" and "Stargate."

The victory caps off a 30-year career for Erickson in the movie business. He announced before the Oscars that he was retiring.

Noting that he's had a "wonderful career," Erickson told the Winnipeg Free Press, "Why not go out on a high point instead of dribbling out toward the end?"

See Erickson and Carter discuss their work on "Lincoln" below.
